How Do I change my Name?
Before proceeding with a name change, you’ll need to acquire a certified copy of your marriage certificate.
The fee for a certified copy varies by location:
Washington, D.C.: $10 – $20
Maryland: $5 – $5.50
Virginia: $3.50
There are two methods to obtain a certified copy of the marriage license:
- Return the court filing copy in person. Then you can request and pay for a certified copy on-site.
- Request a copy by mail, enclosing the required payment. This method takes longer, and instructions should be provided in your marriage license package. Before initiating a request, it’s crucial to confirm that the court has received the filing copy.
